About Us
Mental Health Rights Group is an evolving advocacy group to campaign for mental
health as a human right. We see mental health as a bridge for development. One in
five people in India live with mental illness. Of these millions face significant
disability due to the impact of illness. But perhaps more disabling than the illness
is the humiliation, the helplessness and the isolation that a person living with
mental illness faces every day. Unfortunately, the society and the state remain
oblivious to the situation, needs and rights of persons living with mental illness.
MHRG affiliates organizations, families and individuals dealing with mental health.
MHRG is formed by persons whose lives are touched by mental health issues. Our organizational
affiliates include those who work on the issue of mental health and support people
in diverse circumstances. Mental Health Rights Group also has individual members.
Many of the individual members are first right holders as they are users of mental
health services. Mental Health Rights Group does not insist on disclosure of user
status for being associated. Anyone whose life is touched by mental health issues
can support and join the group.
Our vision is to live in and contribute to building a world which acknowledges each
individual’s rights, dignity, diversity and inclusion. We want to acknowledge and
honor all thoughts and feelings of diverse people in difficult circumstances. As
a group we want to reach out to those who live with psychosocial difficulties and
mental illness so as to ensure that they have equitable and inclusive opportunities
for participation in their life and community.
Over the next year we will work towards the following objectives:
- Ensuring greater voice for people living with mental illness
- Advocating for the rights of persons living with mental illness
- Creating Knowledge Resources for Persons living with Mental Illness
- Collective Fund Raising for Mental Health Projects and formation of a National Mental
Health Fund
- Mainstreaming rights based thinking for policy initiatives for Persons with living
with Mental Illness
- Training the Primary, Secondary and Tertiary level worker for mental health awareness
and service provision
- Creating Replicable Models of Inclusive Opportunities for Sustainable livelihoods
for persons living with Mental Illness
Presently, the Mental Health Rights Group is also focused on campaigning against
Mental Health Act Amendments in India, which are retrogressive and will lead to
many persons living with mental illness losing their liberty and choice
